Every shop in the south suburbs has this conversation a few times a week. Somebody rolls in with a car they have owned for years, the odometer is well past anything resembling a warranty, and the question is the same: is this thing still worth putting money into?
The honest answer from the lift is that the question has almost nothing to do with the odometer. A technician deciding whether a car has life left in it is making a condition judgment. Two cars can show the same reading and the same repair list and get opposite verdicts, because one still has solid metal underneath and the other does not.
This post walks through what actually gets looked at during a high mileage car inspection, in the order a tech looks at it, and which findings are structural versus ordinary wear. It is the same walkthrough we give drivers who come to us for auto repair in Oak Forest, Orland Hills and New Lenox. We are putting no numbers on any of it: parts and labor pricing moves too fast for an article to stay honest, so anything you want costed should come from a current quote on your vehicle.
Old is normal now, so age alone tells you nothing
If it feels like everyone around you is driving something older than they used to, you are right. According to S&P Global Mobility, the average age of light vehicles on U.S. roads climbed to 12.8 years, with passenger cars averaging 14.5 years and light trucks 11.9 years, across 289 million vehicles in operation.
So a 13-year-old sedan running I-80 or I-355 every morning is not an outlier around here. It is the median. Age has stopped being a verdict, which is why the verdict has to come from looking at the car. What a tech is really asking is narrower: is the structure sound, are the safety systems intact, and is the rest just wear?
Nobody in Illinois checks this for you
Illinois does not run a periodic safety inspection on ordinary passenger cars. The only mandated check most drivers in Cook and Will County ever see is the emissions test, which per the Illinois EPA covers most 1996 and newer gasoline passenger vehicles in the Chicago area starting after the car turns four, on a schedule tied to plate expiration.
An emissions test looks at your tailpipe and your onboard diagnostics. It does not look at your frame, your brake lines, or the mounting points your suspension bolts to. Plenty of drivers pass, get the sticker, and assume somebody checked their car over. Nobody did. The under-car look is something you have to ask for, and on a car you have driven for years through Chicago winters it is the most useful appointment you can book at any of our Oak Forest, Orland Hills or New Lenox stores.
Step one of a high mileage car inspection: the metal
Metal comes first because it is the only finding that can end a car’s service life. Everything else is repairable in some form.
Around here, corrosion is not a slow background process, it is an annual event. IDOT goes into a winter with roughly 542,000 tons of salt in its domes and more than 1,800 trucks covering nearly 45,000 lane miles statewide, and it used 312,000 tons last season. All of it ends up in the wheel wells and seams of the cars parked on our south suburban driveways. Scale is not perforation
A crusty looking underbody is not automatically a bad one. The dividing line every tech works from is perforation. Surface rust and flaking scale are cosmetic. Metal you can push a probe through has lost its structural integrity, and no undercoating or paint puts that back.
The method is refreshingly low tech, and carmakers publish it. Toyota’s frame inspection procedure for rust perforation, filed with NHTSA, has the technician raise the vehicle and strike the inboard, outboard and bottom surfaces of the frame rails with a 12 to 16 ounce hammer, using a 10 to 12 inch swing at light to moderate force, every 2 inches along the rails. If perforation happens at any single point, the frame gets replaced.
That test explains something owners find hard to believe: two trucks that look equally rough from the driveway can come back with opposite answers. One rings solid everywhere. The other punches through at one spot.
Where it matters most
The tech is hunting corrosion where the car’s loads pass through:
- Frame rails and unibody rails, including pinch welds and seams where salt and moisture sit
- Subframe and control arm mounting points, where suspension loads concentrate
- Floor pans and support framework, especially around seat and belt anchorages
Virginia’s safety inspection code is a useful yardstick, since Illinois publishes none of its own. It rejects a vehicle for rust holes, for any part of the frame that is broken, cracked, sagging or bent, and when the frame is corroded to the point where it is weakened. It also treats every section of a unitized frame as stress bearing, floors and pinch rails included. On a unibody car there is no such thing as “just body rust” once it reaches those areas.
If a car fails here, that is the honest end of the conversation. No amount of auto repair fixes a subframe that will not hold a control arm, and any shop in Oak Forest telling you otherwise is guessing.
Step two: the brake and fuel lines you cannot see
If the metal passes, the next stop is the plumbing, and it is the part that matters most on an older commuter. Brake and fuel lines run the length of the underbody in the same salt spray as everything else. You cannot see them from the driver’s seat or hear them getting worse, and you feel nothing until the day they matter.
NHTSA has stated plainly that there is potential for brake line corrosion and leakage in older vehicles operated in states with high road salt use in winter. After a five-year investigation that followed thousands of consumer complaints about salt-related brake corrosion, federal safety experts advised owners of older vehicles, singling out cars built before 2007, to have the underside washed to flush out residual salt.
In the same NHTSA docket, the maintenance plan for the vehicles under review called for brake line inspection every 12 months or 10,000 miles, to catch corrosion before it compromises the brake circuit. That is not a shop’s idea. That is the factory.
Why a slow leak is worse than it sounds
Modern brake systems are dual circuit, and many split front to rear so one failure does not take everything at once. NHTSA describes how that plays out: undetected fluid loss first shows up as the brake warning lamp coming on from a low reservoir level. Keep driving with that lamp lit and continued fluid loss can end in the loss of rear brake function. The car still stops, since the front circuit provides roughly 70 percent of the stopping force, but you are driving with one circuit and no backup.
So a weeping fitting on a rear brake line is not a wait-and-see item. Picture an Oak Forest commuter with a 13-year-old sedan on I-80 twice a day: it drives beautifully, nothing feels wrong, and the under-car look finds moisture at a rear line fitting. That outranks every cosmetic complaint on the car, and it is fixable. It is not a reason to give up on the vehicle, it is a reason not to put it off. Fuel lines get the same scrutiny, and any weeping, staining or fuel smell goes to the top of the list.
Step three: what the engine’s own numbers say
Plenty of owners have already convicted their engine by this point, usually because they add oil between changes. Before anybody calls an engine worn out, it gets measured against the maker’s own accepted rate.
GM’s published guideline, covering its 2016 and prior passenger cars and light-duty trucks under 8500 pounds, puts the accepted rate at one quart in 2,000 miles, and notes that vehicles driven aggressively may use a quart every 500 miles with no repair necessary.
That reframes the worry. A car that burns some oil is not automatically a car with a bad engine. It may be doing what its maker calls normal. Two things separate a normal engine from a real finding:
- Burning versus leaking. The same bulletin has technicians check the oil pan and engine covers for leakage from over-tightened, damaged or out of place gaskets, plus oil lines and fittings. Consumption that turns out to be a leak is a repair with a defined end. Consumption with a dry underside is a pattern to monitor.
- Measuring it correctly. An engine should sit at least 15 minutes after shutoff before you pull the dipstick, and readings should be taken at similar oil temperatures.
A leak crosses the line when it puts oil onto a hot exhaust part, a belt, or a brake component, turning a housekeeping annoyance into a safety finding. Step four: the cooling system ages on a calendar
Cooling systems are the quiet ones. Hoses, radiator end tanks, plastic housings and coolant chemistry age on a calendar rather than an odometer, so a low-mileage car that sat through fifteen Illinois winters can be in worse shape than a highway car with double the miles. What gets judged here is a pattern, not one part:
- Hoses that feel spongy, rock hard, or swollen near the clamps
- Plastic end tanks and housings gone chalky, or seeping at the seams
- Coolant turned rusty, oily or cloudy instead of its correct color
- New leaks appearing somewhere different every few months
One failed hose is a repair. A system that produces a new leak somewhere else every time you fix one is telling you its parts have aged together, which belongs in the keep-or-let-go column rather than routine maintenance.
Structural or ordinary wear: how to read your inspection sheet
When a report comes back from a mechanic in Cook County, the findings sort into three buckets, and knowing which is which is most of the battle.

Two cars can arrive with an identical repair list. The one with solid metal gets the repairs and keeps earning its keep. The one with a perforated subframe at a control arm mount does not, no matter how new its tires are.
What to do next
- Book the under-car look before winter, not after. With salt season a few weeks out, findings are easier to act on now than in March.
- Ask specifically for the metal and the lines, not a general once-over, and ask to be shown what was found on the lift.
- Wash the undercarriage all through salt season, as federal safety experts recommend for older vehicles.
- Get anything you want costed as a current quote on your vehicle, then sort the report into the three buckets. Decide on condition, not on the odometer.
A high mileage commuter with sound metal and healthy lines is usually worth keeping, and usually the cheapest car you will ever drive. One that has lost its structure is done. The only way to know which one is parked in your driveway is to put it on a lift.
